Block printing with colour & pattern on textiles

Sunday 21st July 2024  10am – 4pm

On this workshop, which will take place in the Bradbury Makers Shed in Hillsborough Park, Sheffield, you will discover the joys of textile printing using a range of simple but very effective printing techniques.

You will create a design and learn how to use lino cutting tools to carve into an ‘easy carve’ block. Then you will explore ways to create some simple stamps – creating designs to compliment your main block.

Once you have made your blocks and stamps you will print using a range of colourful eco – friendly fabric printing inks. I will show you how to print your blocks and stamps onto a section of fabric before you print your final design onto either a tea towel or tote bag.

Should you wish, as well as producing lots of beautiful printed fabric, you could do some sewing and appliqué work into the textiles you have created during the workshop. I will be talking about my approach to this and bringing along some examples of my recent textile work for discussion and demonstration.

We can look for inspiration in the beautiful walled garden that is right next door to the workshop. Exploring the patterns, shapes and textures we see about us to then produce some vibrant and colourful prints using mono printing, block printing and other simple techniques to create your designs. You can experiment with composition, pattern, texture and colour using a range of colourful eco-friendly textile printing inks, to create a variety of unique hand-printed textile designs onto organic, end of roll and recycled fabrics.

By the end of the workshop you’ll have a wonderful selection of colourful printed fabric swatches which can be used for various sewing projects, and you will have also produced a finished textile piece onto either a bag or tea towel or piece of textile wall art which as I mentioned you could also sew into if you like.

Tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits will be provided. You can bring your own lunch or alternatively there are a number of nearby cafe’s to buy lunch to eat in or takeaway.

This workshop is for complete beginners or for those with previous printmaking experience.
