Whoop! I’ve finished my woodcut printed lampshad

Whoop! I’ve finished my woodcut printed lampshades.

I’ll be bringing some of these to @spiralsfairtrade in Hebden bridge tomorrow along with some other hand printed goodies!

I’m just hand printing some labels for them now ( why do the final jobs always take longer than you expect?) and then I’ll be packing the order up ready to hand deliver tomorrow.

Can’t wait to see lovely Hebden bridge again.

Renewal

The final of 6 works I’ve created for the Adult Acute Mental Heath ward commission.

Made up of some of the printed stencil off-cuts from other prints in the series. It repeats some of the shapes both positive and negative of the print that is 5th in the series ‘The path chosen’, but is a collage rather than a print.

I’m collecting all the work now framed, from the framers today and it will be heading to its new home before long. It’s been an amazing experience and I’m really looking forward to seeing the work when it’s hung.

The themes of sky, earth and sea are themes that link all the artwork commissioned for this project..

I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with process and working with a different palette compared to my usual bright colours.

Taking Stock. Woodcut print 1/1

The 4th of 6 artworks I’ve just completed as part of a commission for @shsc_nhsft

This print was the first I produced of the final 6 selected to make up the series. I’d been printing and experimenting with ideas for work for a couple of weeks or so, before I arrived at this one. My printmaking process is very intuitive and involves a lot of experimentation. Once this print existed, I felt like I was on my way with the commission and I felt much clearer on my direction.

Super excited to watch @bbcriotwomen this Sunday!

It’s going to be brilliant of course, I love Sally Wainwrights work, but I’m extra keen to watch, because a few of my prints and a lampshade are included on the set of one of the characters homes.

I was contacted over a year ago by one of the production buyers for Riot Women who said they wanted to include some of my work in the production as they thought it would work really well. I was asked to keep quiet about it until the show came out, but in July last year I took the work over to Halifax and handed it over to the buyer. Early this year another member of the Riot women production team came to see me at Sunny Bank Mills print fair and showed me photos of the work in situ. Super thrilling!

Annoyingly, I can’t remember which character was ‘mine’ if you know what I mean and of course there are no guarantees my work made the final edit, but I’ve included the works selected in the next few photos, so please keep your eyes peeled if you watch and do let me know if you spot anything!!! Obviously I’ll have my eyes glued to the TV too! 😂

Leaves upon the wind

Here is one of 6 works I’ve created for a recent commission. It’s the second of the 6 and is a one off woodcut print made up of several layers of printing using several small blocks repeated across the composition.

The theme of Sky, earth and sea runs through the project with a colour palette of greens with orange as the accent colour. I led 6 workshops linked to the commission and used the participants preference for trees and leaves in nature as a guide as I developed my ideas. I also considered the cyclical nature of existence, transitions in life from stability through disruption and unpredictability towards a new stage of order and clarity.

Here are the finished art works that were commissioned for the one of the NHS Adult Acute Mental Health Wards here in Sheffield.

Inspired by the theme of Sky, Earth and Sea and in collaboration with some of the service users with whom I ran 6 printmaking workshops.

As I developed my ideas, I also considered and responded to the work created on these workshops, where there was a strong preference for the theme of trees and leaves.

5 of the 6 works are woodcut prints and the final piece is a collage made up of partly of printed papers that were used as paper stencils for the prints, during the process of printing the other 5 works.

As well as the themes of nature, I also considered the cyclical nature of existence, the journeys we go on, often repeated both literally and in our minds. The work as in life transitions from a state of stability and structure, towards disruption and unpredictability before moving towards newly evolved forms of order.
